The best protection for a DJI Avata 2 is DJI Care Refresh, bought with the drone or within 48 hours of activating it. The 1-year plan ($76 here) gives two replacements in a year for a $49 fee each in the US, covers crashes and water damage, and one of the two can be a flyaway replacement for $199. DJI's warranty only covers defects, and neither one pays if your drone hurts someone, which is what drone insurance is for.

Why the Avata 2 needs it more than most
FPV flying means close passes, gaps, trees and flips. The Avata 2 has built-in prop guards but no obstacle avoidance, so contact happens. That makes Care Refresh better value on an Avata 2 than on a camera drone that mostly hovers.
1. DJI's warranty
A new Avata 2 from an authorized dealer comes with DJI's manufacturer warranty. It covers defects and failures in normal use. Coverage periods differ by part, so check DJI's warranty policy. It doesn't cover crashes, water damage or unauthorized repairs. Keep your receipt. See DJI warranty in the USA.

The 48-hour rule. You can add Care Refresh to a new, unactivated drone or within 48 hours of activation. After that, DJI asks for a video verification or an inspection. Add it at checkout so you don't miss it.
Flyaway cover only works if, before the loss, the drone is bound to your DJI account (Profile > Device Management in DJI Fly) and linked to its remote control device. Do this on day one.
Renewing. DJI lets you extend with another 1-year plan up to 15 days after the current one expires, for up to three years.
Which parts each replacement includes is set in DJI's Terms of Service, so check them if you also want the goggles or controller protected. Claims are covered in how to claim DJI Care Refresh.
3. Insurance
Care Refresh fixes or replaces your drone. It doesn't pay for injury or property damage you cause.
- Recreational pilots: the FAA doesn't require insurance, but liability cover is smart, especially for FPV near people and property. Many homeowners policies exclude drones. See does homeowners insurance cover drones.
- Part 107 pilots: clients often ask for a certificate of liability insurance. Compare options in drone insurance.
Which should you get?
- New to FPV: Care Refresh. The first weeks are when most crashes happen.
- Flying over water: Care Refresh, and keep at least 6 m above the water as DJI recommends.
- Paid work: Care Refresh plus liability insurance.
- Missed the 48 hours: try video verification, or look at hull insurance.
Cheap ways to avoid a claim
- Start in Beginner mode and practice in a simulator. DJI suggests Liftoff, Uncrashed, DRL and DCL.
- Set the RTH altitude above local trees, since the Avata 2 can't avoid obstacles on the way home.
- Respect the 10.7 m/s wind rating. See Avata 2 wind resistance.
- Don't fly in rain. See is the Avata 2 waterproof.
Coverage, fees and time limits are set by DJI and insurers and can change. Current as of October 2026.
