Do you need propeller guards on the DJI Flip?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

No. The DJI Flip already has full-coverage propeller guards built into its folding arms; DJI calls it its first drone with foldable full-coverage guards. You don't need an add-on guard, and DJI doesn't sell a separate replacement guard for it. DJI lists only the propellers and the battery as spare and replacement parts, so a cracked or broken guard is a job for DJI repair or a Care Refresh replacement ($39 in the US).

DJI Flip propeller guards
DJI calls the Flip its first drone with foldable full-coverage propeller guards. They're part of the arms, so damage means a repair, not a clip-on swap.

What the built-in guards do

  • Surround all four props, so fingers and faces are protected during palm launch and landing.
  • Fold with the arms for carrying. Unfolding a rear arm also powers the Flip on by default.
  • Survive light bumps with walls and branches.

They aren't a crash cage. A fall onto rock or a hit at speed can still crack a guard, break props or damage the gimbal.

Why not add an extra guard?

  • Weight. The Flip is under 249 g. Extra plastic can push it to 250 g or more, which means FAA registration for recreational flying.
  • DJI's rules. To keep the EU C0 class, DJI says not to add payload beyond its listed qualified accessories (props, battery, ND filters, microSD card).
  • Sensors and airflow. Anything that covers the forward 3D infrared sensor or the downward sensors hurts braking and hovering.

Replacing a damaged guard

Because the guards are part of the arms, there's no DJI part to clip on. Here's what to do:

  1. Stop flying. A cracked guard can flex into a spinning prop.
  2. Check the props. Replace any chipped blades with genuine DJI Flip Propellers. See Flip propellers.
  3. Check the arm hinges. Each arm should fold and lock firmly.
  4. Send it in. If you have Care Refresh, file a claim: in the US it's $39 per replacement. Otherwise, request a DJI repair or use our repair desk.

Third-party "replacement guard" and arm kits exist online. Fitting them means opening the drone, DJI doesn't support it, and damage from it isn't covered. See Flip repair.

Changing props with the guards in place

You don't remove the guards to change props. DJI's steps: power off, unscrew the old prop with the included screwdriver, then gently lift the guard and slide the new prop in from below, line it up on the motor, press it down, and tighten the new screw. Lift the prop gently afterward to check it's secure.

Guards and the rules

Full guards make the Flip friendlier around people, but FAA rules don't change: recreational pilots may not fly over people or moving vehicles, and you must keep it in sight. See Flip license.

Prevent guard damage

  • Fold the arms before packing and store the Flip in its bag.
  • Don't take off from sand, gravel or grass, which DJI warns can get into motors and props.
  • Fly Normal or Cine mode near obstacles so forward braking works. See Flip obstacle avoidance.
  • Add Care Refresh within 48 hours of activation. See Flip protection.

The DJI Flip comes ready with its guards. Keep a spare set of props in your bag instead of buying an add-on guard.
