How to fix the ESC error on the DJI Mavic 3 Classic

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

An ESC error on the DJI Mavic 3 Classic means the flight controller detected a fault in, or lost contact with, one of the electronic speed controllers that drive the motors. A single error after a hard landing can be a glitch that clears with a restart. If it returns, don't fly: the motors or the ESC board need inspection by DJI.

Mavic 3 Classic ESC fixes
Work through these in order. If the ESC error returns after a clean restart, clear motors and fresh firmware, the Mavic 3 Classic needs DJI service.

What the ESC board does

The ESCs convert battery power into precisely timed current for each of the four motors. On the Mavic 3 Classic they're inside the airframe on an internal board, which isn't a user-replaceable part. You'll find replacement "ESC boards" sold online, but swapping one means opening the drone, which can affect your warranty and Care Refresh coverage. Leave it to DJI.

DJI's manual asks you to make sure the motors are mounted securely and rotate smoothly, to land immediately if a motor is stuck, and not to modify the motors.

Common causes

  • A motor jammed by sand, grass or debris after a landing
  • A bent motor or damaged prop after a crash
  • Water from rain or a water landing
  • A loose or dirty battery connection
  • Firmware that didn't finish updating

Fixes to try, in order

  1. Restart cleanly. Power off, remove the battery, check the contacts for dirt, and reinsert it until it clicks. Remove the storage cover before powering on again.
  2. Spin each motor by hand with the drone off. It should turn smoothly and evenly, with no grinding or tight spots.
  3. Clear debris with a hand blower. Don't poke tools into the motor.
  4. Inspect props and arms. Replace chipped or bent props, and check that all four arms unfold fully and lock.
  5. Update firmware. Update the aircraft and controller in DJI Fly. If that fails, refresh the firmware with DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) on a computer.
  6. Note when it happens. If it appears mid-flight, note the time. DJI can read the flight record when diagnosing it.

When it needs a repair

Stop and start a repair if:

  • The ESC error returns after the steps above
  • A motor won't start, stutters, or runs much hotter than the others
  • The drone tilts, twitches or flips on takeoff
  • The error followed a crash or water exposure

ESC or motor faults are fixed by DJI. Crash and water damage fall under DJI Care Refresh if you have it. Otherwise warranty or a paid repair applies; see DJI warranty in the USA.
