How windy is too windy for the DJI Mavic 3 Classic?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

DJI rates the Mavic 3 Classic's maximum wind speed resistance at 12 m/s, which is about 27 mph, 43 km/h or 23 knots. On the Beaufort scale that's level 6, a strong breeze. DJI's manual says not to fly when wind exceeds 12 m/s. Treat that as the ceiling, not a comfortable working condition: fly freely under about 15 mph, take care from 15 to 25 mph, and stay grounded when gusts approach 27 mph.

Too windy for the Mavic 3 Classic?
DJI rates the Mavic 3 Classic for winds up to 12 m/s. The lower bands are our cautious guidance, since wind at 400 ft is often stronger than on the ground.

12 m/s in other units

Unit Mavic 3 Classic max wind
Meters per second 12 m/s
Miles per hour about 27 mph
Kilometers per hour about 43 km/h
Knots about 23 kn
Beaufort scale 6 (strong breeze)

Why the Classic handles wind well

At 895 g with a top speed of 21 m/s (47 mph) in Sport mode, the Classic has plenty of power over its wind rating. That margin is what gets it home against a headwind. Lighter drones under 250 g are typically rated for 10.7 m/s. See Mavic 3 Classic top speed.

Why a 27 mph rating isn't a 27 mph day

  • Wind is stronger higher up. Ground-level readings often understate wind at 300 to 400 ft.
  • Gusts matter more than averages. A 15 mph forecast with 30 mph gusts is over the limit.
  • The return leg costs more. Flying back into wind can take much longer and drain the battery fast.
  • Cold makes it worse. Batteries lose capacity in the cold, which cuts your margin.

Signs it's too windy

  • The attitude indicator in DJI Fly is off center while hovering. DJI says that means wind is pushing the drone.
  • The battery estimate drops quickly.
  • The drone tilts hard just to hold position.
  • Ground speed falls sharply when flying upwind.
  • Footage shows wobble or jello at the edges.

If you see these, descend (wind is usually lighter lower down) and bring it home.

Windy day tips

  1. Check wind and gust forecasts, including wind aloft.
  2. Launch from a sheltered spot, but expect stronger wind once you clear trees and buildings.
  3. Fly upwind first, so the wind helps you home.
  4. Keep the drone close and within line of sight.
  5. Use Normal mode for obstacle sensing; switch to Sport only if you need the power to return.
  6. Land with more battery than usual, at least 25 to 30% on gusty days.
  7. Keep spare batteries warm in cold wind.

Return to Home in wind

DJI warns that the drone may not be able to return home if the wind is too strong, and that the battery estimate can be off when wind differs between altitudes. Set an RTH altitude that clears obstacles without climbing unnecessarily high into stronger wind. See Mavic 3 Classic home point.
