It can be, for a specific buyer. At $1,407, the DJI Mavic 3 Classic still gives you a 4/3 Hasselblad camera, 5.1K video, 46 minutes of rated flight and omnidirectional obstacle sensing. If you shoot mostly wide landscapes and want the big-sensor look for less than a Mavic 4 Pro, it's a solid buy. If you want a telephoto lens, newer O4 controllers or the latest features, the Air 3S ($1,209) or Mavic 4 Pro ($2,419) is the better use of your money.

What the Classic still does well
- Big sensor. A 4/3 CMOS, 20 MP Hasselblad camera with an adjustable f/2.8 to f/11 aperture, plus D-Log, D-Log M and HLG color modes.
- Video: 5.1K up to 50fps, DCI 4K and 4K up to 120fps.
- Flight time: 46 minutes rated, about 37 to 39 in real flying.
- Wind handling: rated for 12 m/s.
- Safety: omnidirectional vision sensing with APAS 5.0 and Advanced RTH.
- Ready for work: Standard Remote ID built in, so it's fine for Part 107 once registered.
Where it shows its age
- One camera. Zoom is digital only, up to 3x and only in video mode. See Mavic 3 Classic zoom.
- Older controllers. It uses the RC-N1, DJI RC or RC Pro on O3+, not the current RC-N3 or RC 2. See Mavic 3 Classic controllers.
- No LiDAR. Newer models like the Air 3S and Mavic 4 Pro add LiDAR to their sensing.
- Software support window. DJI's spec page lists guaranteed software updates until December 31, 2026. DJI released a firmware update in July 2026, and the FCC allows updates for authorized drones until January 1, 2029, but expect fewer new features.
Is it legal to buy in 2026?
Yes. The Classic was FCC-authorized long before the FCC's December 2025 Covered List decision, so it remains legal to buy, own and fly in the US. See Mavic 3 Classic in the USA.
Who should buy it
- Landscape and real estate shooters who live at the wide end.
- Video creators who want the 4/3 sensor's dynamic range and shallower depth of field without paying for extra cameras.
- Pilots who already own Mavic 3 batteries and controllers.
Who should look elsewhere
- Want a telephoto? The Air 3S has a 70 mm camera and costs about $200 less. See Mavic 3 Classic vs Air 3S.
- Want the best image quality? The Mavic 4 Pro has a 100 MP 4/3 camera plus two telephotos for $1,012 more.
- Want three cameras on the Mavic 3 platform? The Mavic 3 Pro adds 70 mm and 166 mm cameras. See Mavic 3 Classic vs Mavic 3 Pro.
- Want small and light? A sub-250 g Mini needs no registration for hobby flying.
Reading reviews
Many Classic reviews date from its 2022 launch, when it was compared against older drones. Check the review date, and compare against what's on sale now. We don't publish our own long-term test, so treat the specs above as the baseline.
Our verdict
Buy the Classic for its sensor and flight time, not its features. Get the Fly More Combo if you buy it; one battery isn't enough for a 4/3 camera drone. Not sure? Try our drone finder or compare models.
