How much does the DJI Mini 3 weigh? (and why it matters)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The DJI Mini 3 weighs 248 g (0.248 kg, about 0.55 lb) with its standard Intelligent Flight Battery, propellers and a microSD card, according to DJI's current spec sheet. DJI markets it as "under 249 g." That keeps it below the FAA's 250 g registration threshold for recreational flying. With the larger Intelligent Flight Battery Plus, it weighs about 290 g and must be registered.

Mini 3 weight vs the 250 g line
DJI lists the Mini 3 at 248 g with the standard battery and about 290 g with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus. At 250 g or more, recreational flyers must register.

Mini 3 weight in every unit

Configuration Weight
Mini 3 with standard battery 248 g / 0.248 kg / about 8.7 oz
Mini 3 with Battery Plus about 290 g / about 10.2 oz
Standard battery alone about 80.5 g
Battery Plus alone about 121 g

DJI notes that actual weight can vary slightly between production batches. Folded, the Mini 3 measures 148 × 90 × 62 mm.

Why 249 g matters

In the US, recreational drones under 250 g don't need FAA registration. You still have to pass the free TRUST test, follow the safety rules, and get authorization before flying in controlled airspace. Key points:

  • Under 250 g, flying for fun: no registration and no Remote ID required.
  • 250 g or more, flying for fun: register for $5 (valid 3 years) at FAADroneZone and meet Remote ID. See FAA registration.
  • Any flight for business (Part 107): registration is required at any weight. See Part 107.

The low weight also helps abroad, where many countries have lighter rules for sub-250 g drones. Check each country's rules before you travel.

The Battery Plus pushes it over

The Battery Plus raises the rated flight time from 38 to 51 minutes, but the drone then weighs about 290 g. DJI's firmware notes say the Mini 3 automatically turns on US Remote ID only when the Plus battery is used. You'll also need to register it. More in Mini 3 Battery Plus.

How much weight can the Mini 3 carry?

Essentially none, and DJI doesn't support it. The manual says not to add any extra payload to the gimbal. Accessories like a propeller guard trigger the Mini 3's Payload mode, which DJI says limits maximum speed and range and lowers the maximum takeoff altitude to 1,500 m. Some practical points:

  • Don't hang things from the Mini 3. It isn't built to drop or carry objects, and added weight cuts flight time and wind resistance.
  • Anything you attach adds weight. A light, a sticker or a guard can push a 248 g drone over 250 g, which changes your registration status.
  • Never combine the Battery Plus with a propeller guard or other add-ons. DJI warns this diminishes propulsion.

Does light weight hurt wind performance?

Some. Lighter drones get pushed around more in gusts. DJI rates the Mini 3 for winds up to 10.7 m/s (about 24 mph). Read Mini 3 wind resistance before flying on breezy days.
