The Avata 2 is better in every area that matters: a larger 1/1.3-inch sensor with 10-bit D-Log M, about 23 minutes of flight vs the original's roughly 18, DJI's O4 video link reaching up to 13 km (FCC), 46 GB of storage, downward and backward vision sensing, quieter flight and one-push Easy ACRO flips and rolls. It's also lighter at about 377 g. If your original Avata still flies well and you mostly cruise, it's still fun. If you film with it, the Avata 2's camera is the reason to upgrade.

What DJI says it improved
From DJI's Avata 2 FAQ:
- Quieter: flight noise down to 81 dB.
- Better positioning: binocular fisheye vision downward and backward, inside the same built-in propeller guard design.
- Camera: a larger sensor area for better low light and dynamic range, improved stabilization, 4K/60 and 4K/100 slow motion, and 10-bit D-Log M.
- O4 video transmission up to 13 km (FCC) with up to 60 Mbps live view.
- Longer flights of about 23 minutes, PD fast charging and a charging hub that stores power.
- Easy ACRO: one-push flips, rolls and 180° drifts with the RC Motion 3.
Goggles and controllers
This trips up upgraders. The Avata 2 ships with Goggles 3 and the RC Motion 3 in the kits we sell. Your old Goggles 2 or Integra can fly the Avata 2, but only with second-generation controllers (RC Motion 2 or FPV Remote Controller 2). See Goggles 3 vs Integra and Goggles 2 and goggles compatibility.
Registration
Both weigh over 250 g, so both must be registered with the FAA ($5 for 3 years) and broadcast Remote ID, even for hobby flying. Flying in goggles also requires a visual observer next to you. See FAA registration and Avata 2 Remote ID.
Should you upgrade?
- Yes if you edit your footage, fly at dusk, or want longer flights and better range in cluttered areas.
- Maybe not if you mostly fly for fun and your Avata is in good shape.
