Yes, if you want to fly FPV. The DJI Avata 2 is the easiest way to get real goggles-on flying with good 4K footage, and at $934 with Goggles 3 and the RC Motion 3 it's a complete kit. It isn't worth it if you mainly want travel photos, follow-me shots or long flights: it has no obstacle avoidance, no tracking modes, a 23-minute rated battery, and at 377 g it needs FAA registration. In 2026 it remains legal to buy and fly in the US.

Where it shines
- Easy FPV. The RC Motion 3 lets beginners point and fly. Beginner mode limits speed to 1 m/s at first.
- Tricks without years of practice. Easy ACRO does flips, rolls and drifts with one push. See Avata 2 flips.
- Room to grow. Add the FPV Remote Controller 3 for full Manual mode at up to 27 m/s.
- Built-in prop guards for close, low flying and indoor fly-throughs.
- Footage you can't get otherwise: dives, gaps, chasing cars and bikes from behind.
The trade-offs
- No obstacle avoidance. Only downward and backward vision. You will bump things.
- No ActiveTrack, QuickShots or MasterShots. See Avata 2 QuickShots.
- Single-axis gimbal. Roll is stabilized electronically, so footage relies on RockSteady or Gyroflow.
- Short flights. Expect well under 23 minutes when flying hard.
- Legal overhead. FAA registration, Remote ID, the TRUST test and a visual observer beside you whenever you wear goggles. See Avata 2 license.
- Crash costs. Plan on Care Refresh, with a $49 US replacement fee.
Is it still a good buy in 2026?
The Avata 2 was authorized by the FCC before the December 2025 Covered List decision, so it stays legal to buy, own and fly, and it still gets updates. DJI's spec page guarantees software updates until December 31, 2026, and in May 2026 the FCC extended its allowance for updates to already-authorized drones to January 1, 2029. Import tariffs since September 2026 affect prices and stock. Read is DJI banned in the US and Avata 2 in the USA.
Better choices for some buyers
| If you want... | Consider |
|---|---|
| Cheap FPV and selfie shots | DJI Neo, 135 g, works with goggles |
| Travel photos and long flights | DJI Mini 5 Pro, 1-inch sensor, 36 min |
| Follow-me vlogging with guards | DJI Flip |
Compare in Avata 2 vs Neo and Avata 2 vs Mini 5 Pro.
Our take
Buy the Avata 2 if the idea of flying through a gap in goggles excites you. Skip it if you mostly want a camera in the sky. If you're unsure, try a free FPV simulator first; DJI suggests Liftoff, Uncrashed, DRL and DCL.
