A DJI Mini 5 Pro usually shows a weak signal because something is blocking the line between the drone and the controller: trees, a building, a hill or your own body. Radio interference in towns and controller antennas pointed the wrong way are next. Keep the drone in clear line of sight, point the antennas toward it, fly higher than nearby obstacles, and update the firmware. If the signal is weak right next to you, the problem is the controller, the phone or the drone itself.

How strong the link should be
The Mini 5 Pro uses DJI's O4+ transmission with four antennas (2T4R) on the 2.4, 5.1 and 5.8 GHz bands. DJI rates it at 20 km (FCC) in open, interference-free conditions, but much less in real places:
| Where you fly | DJI's approximate range |
|---|---|
| Strong interference (urban) | 1.5 to 4 km |
| Medium interference (suburban) | 4 to 10 km |
| Obstructed by trees | 0.7 to 4.5 km |
| Obstructed by buildings | 0 to 0.7 km |
So losing signal behind a single building, a few hundred meters away, is normal.
Fixes, in order
- Get line of sight back. Climb (within legal limits) or move so nothing sits between you and the drone. Behind a building, a signal can drop almost at once.
- Point the controller correctly. On the RC 2, unfold the antennas and face their flat sides toward the drone, not the tips. With either controller, keep the drone inside the optimal transmission zone shown in DJI's manual, and adjust when DJI Fly warns of a weak signal.
- Don't turn your back. Your body blocks signal when the drone is behind you.
- Avoid interference. Wi-Fi routers, cell towers, power lines, radio masts and crowds of phones all add noise. Take off away from them.
- Leave the band on Auto if DJI Fly offers a manual frequency choice, so the link can pick the cleanest channel.
- Check your phone (RC-N3). Use a good USB cable, turn off phone Wi-Fi hotspot, and close other apps. Put the phone in airplane mode with Wi-Fi off if you don't need data.
- Update firmware for the drone and controller in DJI Fly, so both run matching, current versions.
- Check for damage. If the signal is weak a few meters away in open space, especially after a crash, the drone's or controller's antennas may be damaged.
Weak signal right after takeoff
- Restart the drone and controller and re-link if needed.
- Move away from metal structures, cars and Wi-Fi.
- Try the other controller if you own one.
- If it persists in a clean, open spot, contact support or start a Mini 5 Pro repair.
Set your failsafe before it matters
If the controller signal is lost for more than 6 seconds, the Mini 5 Pro starts Failsafe RTH by default. You can choose Hover or Land instead, but RTH is the safest choice for most flights. Before every flight:
- Wait for the Home Point to record.
- Set RTH Altitude above the tallest obstacle around you.
- Keep obstacle sensing on, and still set RTH altitude as if it weren't there.
Range and the law
In the US you must keep the drone within visual line of sight, so you'll never need the full 20 km. A strong link is about a clean, reliable picture inside that limit. Set a Max Distance in DJI Fly's safety settings if you want a fence.
