Osmo Mobile 6 vs Osmo Mobile 3, OM 4 and OM 5: is it worth upgrading?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The Osmo Mobile 6 is worth it over the Osmo Mobile 3 and OM 4 if you want a built-in extension rod, a lighter gimbal and better subject tracking. Over the OM 5 the upgrade is smaller: the Osmo Mobile 6 adds a side wheel for zoom and focus, a status panel, an axis lock and Quick Launch, and newer ActiveTrack. The older OM 4 and Osmo Mobile 3 do win on battery life, rated at 15 hours.

Osmo Mobile 6 vs Osmo Mobile 3

This is the biggest jump. The Osmo Mobile 3 holds lighter phones (up to about 230 g), so many current large phones are too heavy for it. It has no extension rod and an older version of ActiveTrack. The Osmo Mobile 6 handles phones up to 290 g, attaches with a magnetic clamp in seconds and has a 215 mm built-in rod for selfies and low angles. If you own a big phone, upgrade.

Osmo Mobile 6 vs OM 4

The OM 4 already uses a magnetic mount, so setup is just as fast. What you gain with the Osmo Mobile 6 is the extension rod, about 85 g less weight and newer tracking. The OM 4's 15-hour battery is a real advantage if you film all day without a power bank.

Osmo Mobile 6 vs OM 5

The OM 5 already has the 215 mm extension rod and a similar weight. DJI lists these Osmo Mobile 6 additions:

  • A status panel that shows battery and gimbal mode.
  • A side wheel to zoom or focus without touching the screen.
  • An axis lock for storage.
  • Magnetic alignment detection, which flashes red if the clamp isn't seated correctly.
  • Quick Launch, which opens DJI Mimo when you unfold the gimbal on supported phones.

DJI has also continued to update ActiveTrack for the Osmo Mobile 6 through DJI Mimo. The Osmo Mobile 6 works with the OM 5 tripod. If your OM 5 works well, upgrade only if you'd use the side wheel and tracking improvements often.

Should you upgrade?

  • From Osmo Mobile 3 or earlier: yes, especially if your phone weighs over 230 g.
  • From OM 4: yes if you want the extension rod; no if battery life matters most.
  • From OM 5: optional.
  • First gimbal on a budget: the Osmo Mobile SE ($61) covers the basics for less.

The Osmo Mobile 6 is $120 in our store. Before you buy, check your phone against DJI's compatibility list, and see Osmo Mobile 6 vs Insta360 Flow for a non-DJI option.
