Osmo Pocket 3 vs iPhone 17 Pro: which is better for video?

UPDATED NOVEMBER 2026

For walking vlogs, low light and smooth handheld shots, the Osmo Pocket 3 usually looks better: its 1-inch sensor is larger than the iPhone's main sensor, and a real 3-axis gimbal smooths footsteps in a way phone stabilization can't fully match. The iPhone 17 Pro wins on flexibility: three 48MP rear cameras from ultra wide to 4x telephoto, ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2. Many creators carry both: the iPhone for zoom and B-roll, the Pocket 3 for talking-to-camera and motion.

From DJI's Osmo Pocket 3 specs and Apple's iPhone 17 Pro tech specs. The Pocket 3 wins on sensor size and stabilization; the iPhone wins on lenses and pro formats.

Image quality

The Pocket 3's 1-inch CMOS sensor gathers more light than a phone-sized sensor, which shows in dim rooms, at night and in skin tones with less noise. Its lens is a fixed 20 mm equivalent at f/2.0, and zoom is digital.

The iPhone 17 Pro has three 48MP Fusion cameras: a 13 mm ultra wide, a 24 mm main at f/1.78 and a 100 mm (4x) telephoto, plus optical-quality 2x and 8x crops. Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps on the main camera. For framing a distant subject or a wide room, the iPhone has far more range.

Stabilization and motion

This is the biggest difference. The Pocket 3's mechanical gimbal physically keeps the camera level while you walk, run or turn. It also does face tracking, so the camera follows you as you move.

The iPhone uses sensor-shift optical stabilization plus digital cinematic stabilization, and Action mode tops out at 2.8K/60. Results are good, but fast walking shots show more micro-jitter than a gimbal. If you want the iPhone's lenses with gimbal motion, put it on an Osmo Mobile 6 or see best gimbal for iPhone.

Formats and editing

Osmo Pocket 3 iPhone 17 Pro
Top 4K frame rate 120 fps 120 fps (main camera)
Log profile 10-bit D-Log M Apple Log 2
Pro codec No ProRes, ProRes RAW
HDR 10-bit HLG Dolby Vision
Storage microSD card Internal, or external drive for ProRes

If you color grade, both work. D-Log M is covered in Pocket 3 D-Log M. ProRes RAW on the iPhone gives more room in post, at the cost of very large files.

Audio

The iPhone has four mics with wind noise reduction and Audio Mix. The Pocket 3 has three mics and links a DJI Mic 2 or Mic Mini transmitter directly, with no receiver. For clean voice on either, a clip-on wireless mic beats any built-in mic. The Mic 2 also connects to iPhone: see connect DJI Mic 2 to iPhone.

Handling, battery and heat

  • Screen: the Pocket 3's 2-inch screen rotates to face you. The iPhone's display is far bigger for checking shots.
  • Battery: DJI rates the Pocket 3 at up to 166 minutes at 1080p/24. Long shoots on an iPhone drain the battery you also need for calls and maps.
  • One-handed shooting: the Pocket 3 is a grip with a camera on top; it's easy to hold at arm's length.
  • Heat: both can warm up in long 4K high frame rate recording.

Which should you choose?

  • Vlogging, travel walks, family events: Pocket 3.
  • Zoomed shots, product B-roll, everything in one device: iPhone 17 Pro.
  • Low light at a fixed angle: Pocket 3 has the sensor edge; the iPhone's main camera is close in good light.
  • Short-form social clips shot on the go: either. The iPhone posts faster; the Pocket 3 looks steadier.

If you already own an iPhone 17 Pro, the Pocket 3 adds what the phone can't: a gimbal and a bigger sensor in a camera that fits a jacket pocket. More context in vlogging camera vs phone. The Osmo Pocket 3 is from $483.
