The DJI Flip can't do aerial tricks like flips or rolls. DJI confirms it has no Manual (acro) flight mode; the name comes from its fold-out design. Its "tricks" are camera moves: palm takeoff, automatic Smart Snaps shots like Helix, Boomerang and Dolly Zoom, QuickShots and MasterShots with a controller, voice control, and 4K/100fps slow motion. These tips help you get more out of it.

Launch and land faster
- Unfold to power on. The Flip switches on automatically when you extend a rear arm. Folding both rear arms starts a shutdown countdown; press any button to cancel. You can turn this off in DJI Fly's settings when connected to a controller.
- Pick the shot before takeoff. Press the mode button on the side to cycle through modes. The Flip announces each one by voice.
- Watch behind it. After a palm takeoff the Flip flies backward a short way, so give it clear space.
- Palm landing. Move toward the hovering drone, put your hand flat under it, and let it land on its own. Don't grab it.
Use Smart Snaps for hands-free shots
With palm or app control, the Flip runs Follow, Dronie, Circle, Rocket and Spotlight, plus Custom options: DirectionTrack, Helix, Boomerang and Dolly Zoom. Dolly Zoom arrived in the May 2025 firmware. DJI suggests an open, calm spot with strong GPS for it, since any drift shows in the shot. Choose Custom options in DJI Fly over Wi-Fi.
Smart Snaps limit the Flip to 30 m (98 ft) high and 50 m (164 ft) away. For bigger shots, use a controller.
Controller tricks
With an RC-N3 or DJI RC 2 you get QuickShots (including Boomerang and Asteroid), MasterShots, Hyperlapse, FocusTrack and Cruise Control. Give QuickShots room: DJI asks for a 30 m radius and 10 m overhead for Boomerang, and 40 m behind plus 50 m above for Asteroid. Assign Cruise Control to a custom button for smooth, constant-speed passes. See Flip QuickShots and Flip hyperlapse.
Camera tips
- Slow motion: 4K at 100fps for action scenes.
- HDR: on by default at 60fps and below.
- D-Log M: 10-bit flat color for grading. See Flip LUTs.
- Vertical: 2.7K vertical video for social posts. See Flip vertical.
- Phone audio: with DJI Fly connected, the phone's microphone can record sound.

Voice control
Connected to DJI Fly, the Flip accepts voice commands in English or Mandarin, matching the app's language setting. It's handy when your hands are full.
Safety habits that save the drone
- Tracking modes don't brake for obstacles. DJI says the Flip can only emergency-brake when following slower than 3 m/s, so track in open areas.
- Obstacle sensing is forward only, and it's off in Sport mode.
- Take off at least 15 m from buildings and wait for "Home Point is updated".
- Fly in daylight, and keep at least 6 m above water. See Flip waterproof.
Batteries and transfers
- Charging in the drone takes about 70 minutes with a 30W charger. The charging hub fills one battery in about 45 minutes, or two in about 70 with a 65W charger.
- QuickTransfer reaches up to 30 MB/s when your phone is within 2 m of the drone.
